Systems Integrator Smart421 deploys new UK Rail ticket on departure system

New UK-wide ticket on departure system developed by Smart421 and hosted on Amazon Web Services cloud has gone live for UK train operators and will handle £2 billion of ticket sales annually.

Systems integrator Smart421 has launched the Live Sales Management platform (LSM) on AWS Cloud. The “Ticket on Departure” system was architected and delivered by Smart421 for Rail Settlement Plan Ltd (RSP). This system provides the rail industry with a flexible, high availability cloud-based solution to support the online sale of rail tickets and their collection from self-service ticket machines, handling ticket sales totalling two billion pounds per annum. This new system will meet the rail industry’s needs now and into the future, and at substantially reduced operating costs compared to the legacy system.

The new system based on Amazon Web Services and incorporating open source technologies(ForgeRock and RedHat), provides a core service to 21 franchised train operating companies (TOCs) and ticket retailers, allowing passengers to buy online and collect tickets before travelling from ticket distribution machines located in 2,500 rail stations (so-called “Click and Collect”). The system capacity will be in excess of 1bn ticket issues per year, compared with previous capacity of 800M ticket issues per year, representing a substantial revenue stream.

The 13 month contract was won in November 2012 with work on the development commencing in December 2012. Smart421 will also provide a five year 24x7 support service on this deployment.
