Red Hat’s award winning public cloud platform as a service (PaaS) OpenShift Online is proving a huge success for the open source business. Since its launch in November 2011, more than two million applications have been launched on the service, with growth over the last year (August 2013 - August 2014) reaching 105% year-over-year application growth, and 103% year-over-year user growth.
Until now the service has been offered from the US, but as of this week the service will also be served from Ireland, improving application performance in Europe. Early testing indicates improved latency for European customers hosting in the new data centre.
To improve the production experience of application developers, Red Hat has also introduced the Small.highcpu gear, offering a new low cost, production gear designed to provide double the CPU performance of the existing Small gears.
Application deployment to Red Hat’s new European hosting is immediately available for current OpenShift Online customers subscribed to the Bronze and Silver plans.
Commenting on the European launch Ashesh Badani, Vice President and General Manager, OpenShift, Red Hat said, "OpenShift Online has generated impressive interest from users and we’ve seen an increase in the number of subscribers to OpenShift Online over the past year. We’re committed to expanding availability globally to meet their needs. Our new European hosting expansion is specifically designed to support customer success in Europe, enabling our users there to further take advantage of the many benefits of PaaS and cloud.”
