IT employees are to see big salary boosts in 2015

Written by

The average starting salary for new IT hires in the US is expected to climb 5.7% in 2015, with many IT staff expecting to see rises of over 10%, and those in cloud, big data and Internet of Things are some of the ones seeing the highest growth.

There’s a shortage of IT skills and that’s showing in the increase in salaries for those who have the right skillsets. According to recruitment business Robert Half Technology (RHT) show the average starting salary for those in the IT sector in the US is forecast to climb by 5.7% in 2015 – the average increase across all professional occupations is 3.8%. Admittedly the figures are based on US employees, but the same skills are needed in the UK and Europe and there are fewer people to fill the slots in Europe and the UK, so expect wage demands to be even higher here – the stats on the UK figures are due real soon now.

When asked about hiring plans for the next six months, 19% of CIOs said they plan to expand their teams in the first half of 2015, compared to mid-2014, when 14% were planning to add more staff to their departments.

The occupations with the highest growth according to RHTs 2015 Salary Guide are mobile application developers and big data engineers, who can expect a 10.2% and 9.3% increase in starting salaries, respectively.

The 15 positions expected to see the largest salary gains, percentage-wise, between 2014 and 2015 are:
