Data acceleration business Bridgeworks has launched its PORTrockIT Wide Area Network (WAN) data acceleration solution aimed at speeding up backup, recovery and disaster recovery solutions. Designed as a plug-in-and-go technology, with minimal impact on existing IT infrastructure the solution utilises machine intelligence capabilities to reduce latency, congestion and packet loss across a wide range of uses and third-party applications. The technology was specifically designed for enterprises already using third party vendor solutions - such as NetApp SnapMirror and SnapVault, VeritasNet Backup, IBM Spectrum Protect, Caringo, Datacore and VEEAM.
PORTrockIT will run over existing infrastructure, and will accelerate all data types including encrypted or highly compressed data and in Bridgeworks own tests has delivered up to 100 times the performance improvement although on figures provided (see below) 50x seemed to be the max.
Using PORTrockIT with a Veritas NetBackUp workload on a connection with a 40ms latency throughput was raised from 17.4 MB/s to 106.9 MB/s, and on a connection with a 40ms latency and 0.1% packet loss throughput was raised from 4.9 MB/s to 112.2 MB/s. Using PORTrockIT with a NetApp SnapMIrror Remote Replication workload on a connection with a 30ms latency and 0.5% packet loss throughput was raised from 7 MB/s to 117 MB/s, and on a connection with a 70ms latency and 1% packet loss throughput was raised from 2 MB/s to 94 MB/s.
Commenting on the solution Claire Buchanan, CCO of Bridgeworks said “Companies have historically tried to solve their TCP/IP performance problems by investing in more expensive network infrastructure that offers larger bandwidth. Sadly for large volumes of data, such a solution fails to address the network latency issue, offering no improved performance.”
