HP Vertica Crane updates to solve big data problems

Posted By  Marcus Austin

HP has enhanced its Vertica Analytics Platform aka HP Vertica Crane platform to help businesses with un-structured and big-data problems

The new version 7 of the HP Vertica Analytics Platform, also called HP Vertica Crane, has been designed to simplify the exploration and analysis of semi-structured and “dark” data, and provides enhanced integration with Hadoop, as well as offering what HP describes as “significant” security and performance enhancements.

The new version of the platform delivers new services for businesses with big data and semi-structured data eg social media, web logs, sensors and data from the Internet of Things, where the data is rapidly growing and are complicated to assimilate into traditional analytics platforms and data warehouses. HP describes this as “dark” data as it’s difficult to explore and hence remains “dark” to many organisations.

“Everyone is seeking to gain insight from new forms of data, but legacy products waste resources because of the need to wrestle the data into structured formats,” said Colin Mahony, vice president and general manager, Vertica, HP. “The new capabilities of the HP Vertica Analytics Platform deliver immediate value and rapidly ‘shine a light’ on formerly dark data—unlocking the value hidden in both traditional and emerging forms of big data.”

Vertica handles import and manipulation of Hadoop databases

The new platform is also designed to enables businesses to import and work directly with data stored in the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) by offering what it claims is the industry’s “most open SQL-on-Hadoop capabilities.” Additionally HP Vertica Crane also supports direct integration with HCatalog, Hadoop’s table and storage management layer, enabling users to navigate data in Hadoop and load the data into the HP Vertica Analytics Platform.

HP Vertica Crane delivers auto-schematisation

HP Vertica Crane also offers auto-schematisation, which eliminates the need for coding-intensive schemas to be defined or applied before the data is loaded for exploration. It also offers “one-click” schema capabilities that allow for schemas to be created and applied as needed for high-performance analytics. This enables analysts, data scientists and business users to explore and visualize information without burdening, or needing to wait for, their IT organisations to use the lengthy and expensive extraction and transformation tools and processes typical with legacy databases and data warehouses.

HP Vertica Analytics Platform 7 and HP Vertica Flex Zone will be available worldwide in December information on pricing is available at the dedicated HP Vertica Crane site.
